Concept Trailer | Client Brief Launch

On the 13th September, the RSC (our client) came to Stratford College and pitched what they were after from us. We have basically been asked to produce a trailer for a theatre play which can be entirely of our own choice to which we choose, whether Shakespeare or not. Kris Vankay from the company explained how these trailers need to be generated to make the audience excited about a show and should be roughly a minute in length. He spoke about his pre-production methods when planning his trailers that included, making sure you know what the show is about, the key plot points and the undertone.

Kris clearly told us that making sure you understand the show fully is very important as he explained that the concept trailer he created for “The Heart of Robin Hood” he thought was all about Robin Hood in the forest with his bow and arrow, however the actual show was more about Marion and Robin who didn’t even use a bow and arrow once in the play. We also spent time watching back some more trailers Kris has worked on in the past to understand this idea of what a concept trailer is suppose to look like compared to an actual trailer for a show.

What does a producer do?

A film producer is a person who basically oversees the production of a film or project who is usually employed by a production company. They plan and coordinate various aspects of production such as editing, sorting filming locations and coordinating the script writing and directing. If you want to become a film producer, starting somewhere small is great like many experts did to this day. Getting training in cinematography, animation or in any other area of film making is important as it gives you the experience in all aspects in how a move comes together. Making your own amateur films and producing something that showcases yourself is a great way to start before you join the industry.

“They say that if either twin learns that he once was a pair, they shall both immediately die. It means, Mrs Johnstone, that these brothers shall grow up unaware of the other’s existence. They shall be raised apart and never, ever told what was once the truth. You won’t tell anyone about this, Mrs Johnstone, because if you do, you will kill them”.

Pre-Production

Synopsis

The musical of Blood Brothers is about the Johnstone twins who become separated at birth by their mother who planned on only having one child, but couldn’t afford to keep both of them. At a young age they both meet one another where they became ‘Blood Brothers’ which causes a rift between Mrs Johnstone and Mrs Jennifer Lyons as both twins must never find out that they are in fact brothers. As they both grow up living different lifestyles, one becomes raised in a wealthy family and the other in a poor family which leads once becoming a councillor and the other unemployed and in prison. They both find themselves falling in love with the same girl which eventually leads to the tragic death of both brothers.

Location Reece

TV Studio at Stratford upon Avon College

We will be filming the majority of our shots using the TV studio at the college. The main reason we are using this area is because it is a large space with three very good cameras that are used for the TV shows that we are able to use and record from. This also enables us to achieve different angles by setting up the cameras around the subject which will allow us to experiment with a variety of shot types that we like when it comes to editing the trailer together.

This space is especially perfect because of the lighting facilities that we are able to use. The studio offers us eleven different lanterns (six Fresnel and five strip lights) which are able to be gelled up with different colours, allowing us to light our shot the way we want to easily. The studio also offers us two moving Gobo lights that can be easily programmed and positioned around the studio which makes it much easier than getting up the ladders and moving one of the lights that are in the main rig. Having the TV studio at the college is great as it is easily accessible for media students at the college when booked out in advanced at the technicians office, which is why this filming location is great as it is literally on our door step to use.

One of our filming location is also going to be in a woodland area. For this we looked at two potential filming locations in the local area that we could use. The first one was the Welcombe Hills in Stratford upon Avon. Below shows a photo of an area in the hills. We wanted the area to be as dense as possible with trees and bushes and as you can see here, this area is quite open spaced and only scattered with trees which isn’t quite what we wanted. The Welcombe Hills is also very popular to the locals in the area and is usually populated with dog walks often.

Comparing this to the nature reserve in Snitterfield, the woodland was very compact together with little areas that were open spaced which was exactly what we wanted. We experimented with different shots when we visited the location. This area is also very quite and not heavily used by the public for walking and dog walks which means no one could potentially distract us from filming or get in the way of any shots.
